What is PPF

What is paint protection film?

Paint protection film is a clear, self-healing urethane film applied over vehicle paint to absorb the impacts that would otherwise chip, scratch and etch the finish.

Paint protection film (PPF) is a thick, optically clear urethane layer bonded to your vehicle's painted panels. It takes the hit so your paint doesn't — stone chips, road debris, gravel rash, car park scratches, bug etching and bird dropping damage stop at the film instead of the clearcoat. Premium films carry a self-healing topcoat: light swirls and scratches in the film disappear with heat from the sun or warm water.

Autoproject NZ installs paint protection film at our studio at 88 Duke Street, Frankton, Hamilton, for vehicle owners across Hamilton, Cambridge, Te Awamutu, Rototuna, Flagstaff, Huntington, St. Andrews, Tamahere, Matangi and the wider Waikato. Every install starts with proper paint preparation — film locks in whatever is underneath it, so decontamination and paint correction come first when the paint needs it.

Stone chip defence

The film physically absorbs impacts from stones and road debris — the number one cause of paint damage on New Zealand roads.

Self-healing topcoat

Light scratches and wash swirls in premium film heal with heat, keeping the surface looking freshly detailed.

Gloss and Matte finish

Gloss film disappears over your paint. Matte and colour films transform the look while protecting it.

    Coming Soon New at Autoproject

    Spray-applied peelable paint protection.

A new generation of paint protection is coming to our Hamilton studio: a peelable protection system sprayed on in a professional spray booth rather than applied as a film. It does everything you ask of PPF — stone chip, scratch and UV defence over your factory paint — and then goes further. The finish is completely seamless, with no film edges, seams or cut lines even on complex curves. It can be repaired, sanded and polished like real paint. It can be flattened to a genuine orange-peel-free show finish. It can be sprayed in any colour you can imagine. And when you want a change, it peels away cleanly with no adhesive residue, leaving the original paint untouched underneath.

    01 / Seamless

    No edges. No seams.

Sprayed as a liquid in a proper booth, it flows over every curve and body line — a finish film can't match on complex shapes.

    02 / Protective

    PPF-level defence

Stone chip, scratch and UV protection over your factory paint, with a self-healing topcoat for minor surface marks.

    03 / Peelable

    Removes clean

Peels away by hand when you want a change — no adhesive residue, no heat guns, factory paint intact underneath.

    04 / Repairable

    Fix it like paint

Medium and even deep scratches can be sanded and polished out of the coating — damage that would mean replacing a panel of film.

    05 / Concours finish

    Zero orange peel

The coating can be sanded down to a completely flat, orange-peel-free, concours-level finish — something PPF simply can't do.

    06 / Unlimited colours

    Protected, with style

Sprayed colour change in any colour you choose — full transformation and full protection in one system.

    FAQ

    Paint protection film questions.

The questions Hamilton and Waikato owners ask most before booking PPF.

How much does paint protection film cost in Hamilton?

At Autoproject NZ in Hamilton, front end PPF coverage starts from $2,995, the Track Package starts from $5,495, full body coverage starts from $7,995, and custom area coverage is priced by the panels you choose. Final pricing depends on vehicle size, panel complexity, paint condition and the film finish selected — gloss, matte or colour. Every install is quoted after inspection.

What is the difference between front end and full body PPF?

Front end coverage protects the zones that take the vast majority of road-debris impacts: the full bonnet, front bumper, front guards, headlights and mirrors. Full body coverage wraps every painted panel — doors, sills, rear quarters, rear bumper, roof and boot included — for complete protection and the strongest case for resale value.

How long does paint protection film last?

Quality paint protection film is engineered to last for many years of normal driving, and premium films are backed by long manufacturer warranties covering yellowing, cracking and delamination. We confirm the exact warranty for your chosen film and finish at quote, along with the simple aftercare that keeps it performing.

Is PPF better than ceramic coating?

They do different jobs. PPF is a physical urethane layer that absorbs stone chips and scratches — a ceramic coating cannot stop a stone. Ceramic coating adds chemical resistance, deep gloss and easy washing, but no impact protection. The strongest setup combines them: film on the impact zones, coating over everything for gloss and easy maintenance. We'll recommend the right mix for your vehicle at inspection.

Can paint protection film be removed without damaging the paint?

Yes. Professionally installed film on healthy factory paint can be professionally removed without damage, which is why colour change PPF is fully reversible. Removal should always be done by an installer — heat and technique matter.

    What is matte PPF?

Matte PPF is paint protection film with a satin topcoat instead of gloss. It transforms glossy paint into a factory-style matte finish while providing the same stone chip and scratch protection — and it's the correct way to protect genuine factory matte paint, which can't be machine polished if damaged.

What is spray-applied peelable paint protection?

It's a new protection system coming soon to Autoproject NZ: a peelable protective coating sprayed on in a professional spray booth instead of applied as a film. It provides PPF-style stone chip, scratch and UV protection with a completely seamless finish — no film edges or seams, even on complex curves. Unlike film, it can be sanded and polished to repair deeper scratches, flattened to an orange-peel-free concours finish, and sprayed in any colour — and it still peels off cleanly with no adhesive residue. Register your interest and we'll contact you when it launches.

Does my paint need correction before PPF?

Often, yes — film locks in whatever is underneath it, so swirls and defects should be corrected first. New cars usually need only light preparation; older paint may benefit from paint enhancement or correction before film. We assess this at inspection and quote honestly.
